App Store

Oura had a few sleep stage widgets and some decent lock screen widgets, but home screen widget options were basically non-existent. I wanted to glance at my readiness score, sleep data, and activity progress without opening the app — so I made my own widget designs and shared them in a Reddit post on r/ouraring. The post went viral, so I turned it into a real app.

I built the app and launched it via TestFlight. Over time, more than 400 people joined and the feedback kept coming in.

A few weeks after my post, Oura added a Bedtime window widget in the native Oura app. Pretty cool to see a side project nudge the product forward.

For a long time (~3 years, 🤯) the app was just available on TestFlight while I kept bumping builds. New people were joining via the old viral post — to this day they still are, marketing is awesome.

Then during Christmas holiday I had to migrate the app to OAuth since Oura had announced they were sunsetting PAT access. But after 3 years from the initial post, tech had moved light years — with the help of Claude Code I migrated to OAuth, added a lot of new widgets and released the app to the App Store as a paid app. The interesting part is that implementation took a few days, but releasing to the App Store... like 2 weeks of back and forth.

After the app launched, I got initial traction from friends and users from TestFlight. In a week I had about $100 in revenue and hit the #2 paid app in the Czech App Store for the health category.

Then I decided to migrate to in-app purchases since having a paid app without the option to try it first felt too restrictive, and you need really strong traction for that to be a viable model. So another week spent migrating to in-app purchases with RevenueCat (hope you never find yourself in this situation — iOS and App Store Connect make this a terrible DX with a lot of edge cases). You basically end up testing in production anyway.

After migrating I made a few widgets free and added a $4.99 lifetime unlock for all widgets, current and future.

All-time Revenue

6.35 Oura Rings

$2,534 in revenue

I'm not expecting anything crazy big from this side hustle, just wanted to get the app I originally created a few years ago to the finish line. And hey — it's my first app on the App Store and technically my first independent internet money. Not gonna lie, RevenueCat notifications with sales hit different in the morning.

Anyway, it's fun and I'm glad it actually helps people. Also worth noting — thanks to this Reddit post I met (online) Addison James who supported me along the way! Thanks, Addison!

Along the way, I noticed that giving feedback to Oura was really hard for the community. So I also created a public feature request platform for the Oura community. Hundreds of people voted and shared ideas.

Fun fact: if you Google oura feature request, my post is still the #1 search result.
